Beginner Chapter books for boys 2026
It can be so exciting as a parent, when your kids start reading chapter books! It is a real milestone and one to be celebrated, for sure.
As a teacher for over 25 years and a mom to two boys, these beginning chapter books have stood the test of time. I am recommending these for boys, because I speak most from a boy mom point of view. But, of course, these appeal to many emergent readers – both boys and girls.
Our beginner chapter books for boys meet these requirements:
- These chapter books are easily digestable – not to long, but long enough to have chapters. Some of them can be read in one sitting, while others can be read over a few sittings.
- These chapter books promote a love of stories. They are highly relatable to the 7 to 10 crowd, are funny or interesting or both!
- These chapter books are by prolific authors – so once your kid reads one, they are more likely to want to keep reading and get hooked on an author
Encyclopedia Brown Mysteries
Encyclopedia Brown has stood the test of time. First popular in the 70’s, these book are filled with short mysteries where you, as the reader, try to solve the mystery.
The chapters are small and entities in their own right. Best yet, there are 29 plus books in all, so plenty for your junior detective to get their hands on. Start with a small 4 box set or invest in a 12 book set to keep your kiddo reading for an entire month.
The mysteries are a few pages long – perfect length for a beginning reader and they are so fun to read aloud as a family and solve the mysteries together.
The 13 Story Treehouse Books
Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton are quite a team! The 13-Story tree house books are hilarious and definitely have kids seeing reading as fun!! There are now 13 of them – which tells you how popular they are.
What I love about the format of these books is that the pages are illustration heavy, so kids do not get overwhelmed with too much text on a page. My family still laughs about the inflatable underwear that makes an appearance in many of the books. Forced to wear it by his over-protective mother, Terry finds it comes in hand in many of their adventures!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kid, not get hooked on these books!! A set of 13 would make a great gift!!
Big Nate books by Lincoln Pierce
Somewhere between a graphic novel and regular ol’ chapter book, Big Nate is a super likeable character that kids really identify with. He is funny, but still respectful to parents and teachers and perfect for beginner chapter books for boys.
Again, there are so many Big Nate books that will entertain your kids for hours. Get kids started with the first Big Nate book or count on them loving this author with this 8 book box set.
Kate Di Camillo’s Mercy Watson Books
One of my favorite author’s of all time, Kate DiCamillo has a great beginner chapter book series – Mercy Watson Books! Based on a fun-loving couple who has a pig for a pet, these books are funny and have a great cast of characters (who have some great spin off books, as well!)
Larger print and big illustrations make these perfect for beginning chapter book readers. Enjoy the Mercy Watson books along with the spin offs from Dekawoo Drive.
Spiderwick Chronicles
There are so many off-shoots of this series — it has been a best seller for 20 years for good reason.
Siblings Jared, Simon; and Mallory, discover that there’s a magical and maybe dangerous world existing parallel to their own. You can start with book one or get one of the many series under the Spiderwick name.
There are more than 12 books in this series and a great segue into Harry Potter books!!
The World according to humphrey
Highly entertaing and relatable, The World According to Humphrey is a series of beginner chapter books told by a second grade class pet – a lovable Hamster named, Humphrey.
The books tackle real-life issues that affect kids and make them feel not so alone. Themes like moving, being lonely, nervous and scared are handled in a way the reader can really benefit from.
Pick up just the first one or get a small set to get your kid reading multiple chapter books.
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing
Long standing favorite of my kids and students, alike, Judy Blume’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is a perfect beginner chapter book because it is so funny and real!
Any kid will see themselves in Peter and his little brother, who always gets into trouble. This series, written about 40 years ago, stands the test of time perfectly. There is a Fudge boxed set with them all!!
Your kids will read a book written during a time when ipads and video games did not exist and will see how kids kept themselves occupied outside. : )
I survived series
Many kids are drawn to disasters and gory stuff – it sparks their curiosity and excitement and gets them reading more! The “I Survived” Series has been a long-standing favoirte of my 2nd and 3rd grade students.
Based on real events, kids learn a little bit about history at the same time. You can start with the favorite of my own two kids or get yourself a little boxed set at a deep discount.
My Weird School Series
I have nearly the entire set of these in my 1st thru 3rd grade Montessori classroom and kids LOVE them. They are silly, not great “literature”, but kids gobble them up. Remember, one of the things we are trying to do with begining readers is get them to LOVE reading. These books seem to do that!
The books are all set at a school where goofy teachers, well, act goofy! They are highly relatable and easy to read and short in length. Try the first one or get a boxed set of the first 12.
Warrior Series
This is the series that got my youngest hooked on chapter books. Up until 3rd grade he shied away from chapter books. Then he read the first book in the Warrior series and was hooked!! These beginner chapter books for boys (and girls!) are exciting and tell the saga of 4 clans of wild cats. They open up an entire world for the reader.
I have seen this series be an entry point into reading chapter books for sooo many kids over the years. They appeal to both boys and girls, too.
These do come in a graphic novel version, too, if you think your kids would prefer that.
Anything by Roald Dahl
The absolute master, in my opinion, of children’s books, Roald Dahl books have been enticing kids to read for 5 decades! Roald’s books are super funny and definitely quirky!
I love that the kids always win out – and usually against a few vile adults. Some of Dahl’s shorter books are perfect for beginners. The Twits and George’s Marvelous Medicine are great chapter books for the begiinner.
Mighty Jack Series
Ben Hatke is an amazing author and one your kids will get hooked on – good thing, too – he’s got a trilogy of Mighty Jack books to read.
Yes, these are graphic novels, but are so engaging for kids and will get them hooked on books, guaranteed! He’s also got Zita the Spacegirl, another great option.
