What Do You Need To Make Energy Balls?

Our high-protein energy balls are filled with feel-good ingredients. The basic recipe calls for just a few ingredients:

  • Organic Oats are the mainstay of this recipe. Opt for gluten free, if needed.
  • Organic Dates: If you get pitted dates, it makes things easier.
  • Protein Powder of Choice – we LOVE Sunwarrior Brand
  • Superfood of choice: Chia Seeds, Flax Seeds, or Hemp Seeds,
  • Bit of coconut flour or coconut sugar for coating
  • Pinch of salt

That’s all for the basic version, but of course, you can add some more mix-ins…

What else can you add to these energy balls?

One of the great things about these is their versatility. There are so many things you can add to these.to make each batch a little different and keep your kids on their toes!

Other ingredients to mix things up a bit:

  • 1/2 cup nut butter of choice
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup dried cherries or raisins
  • A heavy shake of cinnamon and then roll them in cinnamon and coconut sugar
  • Mini chocolate chips – I like to roll then chocolate chips and kinda press them in. Then kids see the chocolate chips, too. They can be added into the mix but they get chopped up too small to notice.
  • 1/2 cup of nut of choice – walnuts, peanuts, pistachios, etc.
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup sprinkles (roll in coconut sugar for a birthday cake treat!)

Energy Balls are So Foolproof!

Energy Balls are so easy to make ! Getting the consistency correct is probably the most important part. The “dough” should be a bit sticky, as seen in the photo above.

You can add in a bit of the water the dates soaked in tif the mixture seems to dry. Add a bit more oats or superfoods if it feels too sticky.

I also like to refrigerate the dough for about 15 minutes BEFORE I roll them. It makes it a bit easier and less sticky.

Your kids can help make these

Rolling the energy balls can be especially fun for kids! They may get a bit messy, but, then they can lick their fingers when they are done.

The more kids have a stake in their food, the better the chances are of them eating it. Cooking gives kids lots of skills and boosts their confidence.

We LOVE this online cooking class for kids…both of my kids cook as teens, because of this class!

Easy, High Protein Energy Bites

These easy energy bites are foolproof and can be a great lunch box snack. The basic version is nut free, but these can be customized with nuts, too.
Prep Time 20 minutes
Course: Breakfast, snacks

Ingredients

  • 40 Pitted Dates
  • 2 cups organic oats
  • 1/2 cup superfood, like chia or hemp seeds
  • 2 to 3 scoops protein powder Sunwarrior is out favorite
  • 1 pinch salt

Equipment

  • 1 Food Processor

Method

  1. Soak the dates in boiling water for about 5 to 7 minutes to soften.
  2. Meanwhile blend the oats in a food processor to break them up a bit, about 30 seconds.
  3. Add the dates and blend a bit more.
  4. Add the superfoods and protein powder and salt and blend until the mixture is a bit sticky.
  5. Take out just enough to roll into about a 1.5" ball. Roll it in your hands and then roll in coconut flour or coconut sugar to help them not stick to each other in the container. If you are adding mini chocolate chips, now is the time to roll a few of them in, as well.
  6. Place in an airtight container and keep in fridge or freeze. These make great lunchbox treats – take them out of the freezer and they will be perfect by the time lunch rolls around.
